Shut Up and Like It

I feel most saddened by how most of us Americans treat worship, as if it were a product we consume. Someone once asked Eugene Peterson, "What is the single most important act of the Christian that could do the most good for the church in America?" After a thoughtful pause, Peterson answered, "Go to the church nearest your home, shut up, and like it."(The Complete Book of Discipleship by Bill Hull, pg. 220)

Carson on Seminary

When asked in an interview if pastoral training should happen in the context of the local church, or if seminary was the ideal mode of preparing pastors, Carson responds with wisdom and insight:
“I don’t want to be forced to say that the proper way to think of it is ‘We don’t need seminaries.’ Or ‘To preach in any church you must have a master of divinity or you cannot be ordained in our denomination’,” he explained. “Both of those stances, it seems to me, are reductionistic. They are much too narrowly driven culturally, and they are ignorant of what God is doing in all kinds of places. The important thing is how you can promote the Gospel, train people and help them to understand the Scriptures well.”

Powlinson

Dr. David Powlinson and the gang at CCEF have influenced me greatly in the area of pastoral counseling and even applying the gospel to all of life. In these two videos Powlinson addresses some important questions.

The Doctor

D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones has had a tremendous influence on my understanding of preaching. When I was first getting involved with local church ministry and preaching, I read Preaching and Preachers and loved it. Here is a video of the Doctor:

King's Cross

I'm not ashamed to say it... I love Tim Keller. I think he is brilliant and I have benefited greatly from his ministry. Here is video of Keller talking about his new book that came out this week.
